Geoffery Chaucer is the most famous medieval authors. He grew up in a middle class family in London, England. His father, a vinter, owned a small business along Thames Street. A clerk, who worked at the Chaucer’s, saw talent in young Geoffery and taught him to read before he was ready for school. In the Hundred Years’ War, Chaucer was a skilled soldier that got captured and taken prisoner in France. It has been said this is when Chaucer began to write poetry. After the war, Geoffery received a job within royalty and traveled Europe to deliver diplomatic errands. Throughout his travels through Europe, Chaucer got a taste of feudalism. He based his famous epic “Canterbury Tales” off the life style of the medieval times. The poem is written about pilgrims experiences traveling to Canterbury. Because there was no printing press, the epic was written down on scraps of manuscripts. Chaucer did not even finish “Canterbury Tales”, because he died in 1400 before the poem was finished. He was the first to be buried in the Poet’s Corner at the Westminster Abbey.
